FIBA Americas League - Halcones de Xalapa start quarterf-inals with dominating win over Soles
XALAPA (FIBA Americas League) - Halcones de Xalapa started the Quarterfinals of the FIBA Americas League with a win at home against Soles de Mexicali by the score of 93-78. Now Halcones take a 1-0 series lead and are one win away from the Final Four to be played in February. They will visit Soles on January 21 and if the host wins they play the third game on January 22.
XALAPA (FIBA Americas League) - Halcones de Xalapa drew first blood in their FIBA Americas League quarter-final showdown with Soles de Mexicali, winning 93-78 at home.
Halcones will look to clinch their passage to the final four, which will be played in February, when they visit Soles on January 21. A deciding third game will be played, if needed, the following day.
Halcones began the game with a 14-5 run in the first five minutes and led 25-14 at the end of the first quarter. Victor Avila had 10 of those Halcones points.
In the second period, Victor Mariscal came to the fore and along with Avila helped the home side take a 54-44 advantage to half-time. Halcones were eight of 13 (61.54%) from three-point range and 10 of 13 (76.9%) from the charity stripe in the first two quarters.
They pressed home their advantage over the final two quarters, building a 78-57 lead late in the contest.
Gustavo Ayon finished with 20 points while Mariscal, Avila and Michael Johnson scored 13 apiece. Ronald Selleaze and Samuel Bowie netted 10 points each. Halcones did much of their damage at the line where they were 25 of 38 (65.%) at the line. Greg Lewis had a game-high for Soles, who were outrebounded 37-29.
