FIBA AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP, SUMMER 2007
TEAM CHARACTERISTICS
This team is individually talented and plays a game more suited to their professional game. Blend
individuals into the team concept with ball movement, spacing and making the extra pass. Transition
game and half court offense make them capable of scoring points quickly. Defensively, strength and
length are the basis of their half court game. Make it difficult to score in the paint because of physical
play and ability to block shots. The degree to which they can assemble a team oriented concept and
get it on the floor will be crucial.
TRANSITION

Transition is a major part of their offensive output. Break is ignited by a quick outlet pass to point
guard after miss or made shot. 4 man quickly steps out of bounds and passes into point guard within
a second or two. Pass is advanced up the floor by pass primarily to open shooters. Will often shoot
off one pass from point guard. Second look is to penetrate the defense before they are set and
create a shot or dish to teammate. Some players capable of taking rebound and leading the break.
OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES

Offensive system is based on spacing the floor, forming triangles on one side and penetrating the
defense. Individual strengths blend into the team concept on offense. Offensive rebounding is a
strength and points are consistently produced off the glass. Offensive is based on simple movement
and concepts. One-one-one, two man games and set plays are relied on in the half court.
SET PLAYS
- Two
guard front, block screeners. Cutter uses baseline screens to get
open on either wing or
paint.

- Dribble
out, wing cross screens, diagonal back screen & on ball
screen.

- Guard
pass and cut through, high post sets on ball screen on wing. 2 man
game.

A blend of man-to-man and zone offense principles are used against half court zones. Based on a 3
out, 2 in alignment initially. Line ups will dictate subtle changes in the zone attack. 3 out, 2 in can flow
into 4 out at any time. Baseline runner concept using block screeners, dribble cutters through the
zone, on ball screening and screening in the zone on the back side are all used against zone
defenses. Three perimeter players space the floor and feed off each other. Like to shot fake and
drive or pass.
OB PLAYS

Various plays begin with 1-4 high, 1-4 low and box formation. If defense cheats, players will back cut
on weak side of the basket. Screening action by posts may lead to a slip or lob into the middle of the
paint or rim. Creating points occasionally comes from OB plays, but usually comes from half court
offense.
DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS

Use trapping to force opponent into turnovers as an element of surprise. Trapping can come after in
bounds pass on OB play or when defending on ball screens. Ability to get deflections and block
shots in the paint are defensive allies. Overall, defensive play is physical in the half court. Post
players use body and strength to move offensive players out of scoring areas, including the block.
Help defensive principles are evident though ability to close out is average.
