FIBA AFRICA WOMEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2007, WOMEN

    TEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Defensive pressure is the anchor of this team. Anywhere on the floor, half court or full court they will
pressure the ball. Use the entire defensive end to work on the offense. Traps, forcing inside/out
action, ball pressure and defensive rebounding describe their defensive system. Very much a team
effort on offense with all five players capable of scoring from inside and out. Favor the shot fake and
drive, attempting to get all the way to the rim. Good passing team especially when the defense steps
    up to help.

    TRANSITION
A post presence on defense creates blocked shots leading to transition baskets. A scrappy, physical
defense on the perimeter also adds to transition possibilities. Ball is advanced by dribble and pass up
the sideline. Post players run the floor well and receive passes from the wing for lay-ups.

    OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES
Offensive tendency is to take what the defense gives up. When the defense sags on the post, they
get the ball to shooters on the perimeter. When they pressure the perimeter, the ball goes inside.
Post players do very good job of catching in the post and facing the basket. They can make move to
score or quickly throw out to the opposite wing and flash to the open area. Spot up perimeter players
are several feet outside the three point line when they spot up, making it a longer close out for the
    defense.

    SET PLAYS
    1. Dribble out, gut cut by forward. On reversal, shuffle cut and staggered single for shooter.
    2. On ball screen and roll on open side of the floor. Screener rolls hard to rim.
    3. Blind pig play. Weak side low post cuts to high post as wing cuts back door for lay up.
    ZONE OFFENSE
Zone offense alignment is a box with a baseline runner. The runner makes cuts based on where the
ball and open areas are. When cutter and a post step out to perimeter, defenders find it hard to
cover all four spots. If they can beat the zone down the floor and shoot open three point shot they
will. When the ball is passed to the middle, defense collapses which opens perimeter players
forshots. Baseline runner attracts defenders as they cut along the baseline. Post can read the
defensive shift and step up into gaps in the zone.

    OB PLAYS
Baseline OB play has two options; ball is inbounded and reversed. In bounds passer goes opposite
and cuts off weak side post's screen. If no shot available ball can go inside or to high post. If passer
goes ball side after throwing the ball in, post on right block is isolated one on one. Sideline OB
becomes a shuffle cut followed by a staggered single screen for shooter.

    DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
A very aggressive defensive system that attacks the weaknesses of the opponent. Pressure is full
court at times making the point guard work to get the ball up the floor. Once in the front court, the
offense must work hard to execute. Deny the passing lanes and will trap anywhere on the floor when
the opportunity is present. Can block shots at the rim and rebound well on the defensive boards. Also
will play a 2-3 that is active and moves well. Guards in the 2-3 have freedom to step out to 25-30 feet
to pressure the ball. If the ball is picked up on a sideline or corner, a hard trap will follow. They will
then take away passing lanes to steal the pass out of the trap.
