    MALI
FIBA AFRICA WOMEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2007, WOMEN

    TEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Big presence inside characterizes their team. Allows them to protect the basket, rebound well and
score inside. The high low pass is a favorite option on offense. Patient on offense, waiting for an
isolation situation or high low pass. Good in transition as getting to the rim is their goal. When posts
are running the floor they expect a pass at any time. Can catch and finish off the break.

    TRANSITION
Transition game is ignited two different ways: Quick outlet pass or the rebounder takes it coast to
coast on the dribble. Very determined to get to the rim in transition but will dish if defense takes away
driving angles. Post players run the floor and score from the ball being advanced by the pass.

    OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES
Very inside oriented in their attack. Post are active and agile and work hard on the block. Skilled
scorers in the paint and along the baseline. Perimeter players can catch and shoot quickly. Main
strategy is to reverse ball to the top of the key and throw high low pass. Another common action is
quick ball reversal and cutters from the weak side making cuts to the ball. Can really score points if
their transition and half court game is clicking.

    SET PLAYS
    1. Wing hand-off to flare screen. If shot is not open, look to pass down to low block.
    2. Hand-off to strong side post up with weak side screening and cutting action.
    3. UCLA cut for post player to block. On ball reversal, a lob pass to open post.
    ZONE OFFENSE
Post players key the zone attack. Their responsibilities are on the block but can step to the perimter
or to the corner. Both moves make it 4 out 1 in. On ball reversal, guards get feet set and shoot it
quickly. Focus is always to throw the ball inside the paint.

    OB PLAYS
Best OB play starts from in a box. Cutters flood the ball side as back screen is set for weakside lay-
    up.

    DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
There are many facets of the defensive system. The zone coverage is a 2-3 or 3-2 with a post
anchored at the free throw line. Will pick up full court man to man to pressure the ball. May also trap
in the half court when pass is made to the wing. Post are long and active and cause a lot of
opposition at the rim. Block a lot of shots.
