MIES (Switzerland) - In just over a decade, 3x3 basketball has gone from the streets to the Olympic and world stage. The resounding success of 3x3 in Place de la Concorde during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has further fueled the discipline’s remarkable global growth.
At a recent FIBA 3x3 basketball stakeholders meeting, attendees, including FIBA Central Board Members, 3x3 Commission members, partners, and hosts, gathered to discuss the extraordinary growth of 3x3 basketball since its Olympic debut in Tokyo. They also acknowledged the success of 3x3 competitions in the professional circuit and national teams.
"The electric atmosphere and presence of passionate fans in Paris has underlined the incredible potential of 3x3 basketball. Looking ahead, we aim to build on this success, further expanding our reach and engaging new audiences worldwide," said Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General.
Mayor Sato's Commitment to 3x3 in Utsunomiya
The 3x3 World Tour has been instrumental in the growth and development of 3x3 basketball. One of its regular stops is the historic Japanese city of Utsunomiya, which once again hosted this season's 17-stop 3x3 World Tour.
Mayor Sato of Utsunomiya has been a steadfast supporter of 3x3 basketball, recognizing its positive impact on the city. Utsunomiya has embraced 3x3, hosting major events and welcoming the world annually for the next four years. This commitment has enhanced the city's international reputation, bringing positive economic and cultural benefits.
"3x3 basketball has provided a major boost to the city of Utsunomiya economically, attracting international visitors and fostering a vibrant community spirit. We are excited to continue hosting and building this incredible sport discipline for the next years," said Mayor Sato.
Promotion Efforts and Partnerships
The discipline’s growth is also due to strong promotional efforts and partnerships. FIBA's collaboration with Wilson, for instance, has significantly boosted 3x3’s global presence.
"Our partnership with FIBA has been instrumental in expanding 3x3 basketball's reach. We've worked together to continue making it a global sport, which has generated value for us," stated Ben DeLaCruz, Wilson Global Basketball - Senior Manager.
As 3x3 basketball continues to captivate audiences worldwide, the future holds immense promise, with LA28 on the horizon and ongoing international engagement poised to drive the sport to new heights.
