After watching countless games from the stands of Abdi Ipekci Arena, on Saturday nearly 100 basketball fans had the chance to test themselves in the Fans Against Violence 3x3 Tournament on a court renowned for hosting FIBA EuroBasket and FIBA Basketball World Cup games.
Fans Against Violence, a project supported by the European Commission, aims to build understanding and tolerance among fans of different teams. Alongside Turkey, countries such as Spain, Lithuania, Croatia, and Bulgaria are partners in the programme.
Saturday's event featured 26 teams and 84 athletes competing in men's and women's divisions. In the men's final, Adabazar defeated Istanbul University Tayfa 14-12, while Bilgi Team defeated Triplets 10-8 in the women's decider.
The victorious teams earned the right to represent Turkey at an international Fans Against Violence 3x3 Tournament that will take place from 30 April-3 May in Lithuania.
On Sunday the victorious teams were recognised at halftime of the Spor Toto Basketball League (BSL) game between Demir Insaat Buyukcekmece and Darussafaka Dogus. Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) President Harun Erdenay, BSL Director Samer senbayrak and Darussafaka Dogus Board Member Ibrahim Kutluay presented the successful participants with their trophies.
At the Turkish Basketball Federation, we recognise that our sport is about far more than what happens on the court. By engaging our fans directly and sharing our values through Fans Against Violence, we are making a valuable investment in the future of basketball. - Erdenay
"One of the top priorities for the Spor Toto Basketball League is to create the best atmosphere possible for our players and fans," said Senbayrak. "We're thrilled to support this valuable project and I'm certain it has already made a positive contribution to Turkish basketball."
In addition to the 3x3 tournament, Fans Against Violence has also organised roundtable discussions with media, panel discussions with players, a visit to Spain, and a bi-monthly television programme that airs on Sports TV.
