Euroleague Final Four 2012 FC Barcelona

    Team Characteristics

This team loves to run and shoot from outside. Maybe the only thing missing is a continuous low post presence on offense. They run the pick & roll in all variations including a third or fourth player. As a team they play basketball above the level of the rim, which gives great problems to teams that can’t match their level of athleticism. Besides those factors spacing and passing is essential to their success. They are a very structured team in all elements of the game.

    Transition

This is an up tempo orientated team, with all players understanding each parameter of a successful transition game. It starts with their strong defensive efforts combined with strong rebounding which is then followed by immediate initiation of transition. The rebounders are trained for the outlet pass and all guards and forwards push the fast break and their centers run very well. The spacing is great in all phases of transition. They can run all transition and they are even more deadly when they wait around the perimeter for a kick out pass, with their sharpshooters waiting to score. If the fast break doesn’t give any result, their secondary pick & roll will give profits.

    Offensive Tendencies

A very much transition orientated team, but they can run long exhaustive sets also. What makes them special is the fact that they rarely use the same entries into their set offenses, they change depending on the players on the court. They are a great special situations team, especially meaning end of quarter and end of game situations. Some offensive elements should be highlighted as well as their baseline exits, curls and backdoors.

    Set Plays

Low post isolation: They use this set to get the ball in the low post on either side. If one side is not in position to score they will try to look for the center on the other low post. If neither of the two can score they will pass the ball back out for a pick & roll or swing around the perimeter for a three pointer or they will even look for back door cut options to score.

Side pick & roll: This is a set in which Lorbek creates the situation on the sideline. He either goes for a pick & roll, pick & pop or he will go into the low post and ask for the ball. This set can therefore utilize several techniques because of the “playmaker skills” of Lorbek. Spacing and passing if very essential in this set and determines to scoring options.

    Zone Offense

This team has everything a coach could ask for when talking about offensive possibilities. You can’t rely on confusing them by setting up a zone. All players are quick to react and adapt. Their spacing and passing is great, but what makes them really dangerous in their zone offense is their rebounding. These offensive rebounds are mostly converting into second chance three pointers. As a team they usually continue running set plays versus zone defenses or they just work with bumps or pick & roll options to create scoring opportunities.

    OB Plays

They will look to get the ball in the hands of Mickael close to the basket or in the mid post. From there they will look for a one on one situation to score, mostly with penetration or posting up for a fade away. If Mickael doesn’t get the ball they will look for a center also close to the basket. If the entry pass isn’t available close to the basket they will pass the safety pass to half court and initiate a middle pick & roll.

    Defensive Characteristics

A very rough and dirty defensive style of play. Everyone is always chasing behind the shooters, they all fight for position in the low post and every time the help is coming their rotations and close outs are greatly orchestrated. Rebounding is a mayor strategy of this team and all players box out and all are involved with their duties in rebounding. Besides the roughness this team is also dangerous in raising tensions in special periods of the game and they are mentally very strong.
