ORENBURG (FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017) – Montenegro have made a surprise move ahead of the FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017 Final Round by installing Roberto Iniguez as their head coach.

The Spanish play-caller who is currently at Nadezhda Orenburg, is rated as one of the best on the Continent after delivering success at club level and specifically in EuroLeague Women.

He led Ros Casares to the coveted title in 2012, as well as lifting Fenerbahce to successive Finals. Then, last season, he guided Nadezhda to a shock place in the title game at the Final Four in Istanbul. Iniguez also won the Liga Femenina title with Spar Citylift Girona prior to moving to Orenburg.

Montenegro left it until the last day of qualifying before punching their ticket to the Czech Republic

Handing the reins to Iniguez will come as a surprise to many, since his predecessor Momir Milatovic successfully guided Montenegro to their fourth Final Round appearance in a row - negotiating a tough qualifying group including both Italy and Great Britain.

Iniguez does have a link to Montenegro in that he coached one of their naturalized options Angelica Robinson last season. He will also have the inside track on Russia who will be one of Montenegro’s opponents in Prague along with Belgium and Latvia.
