MILAN (Italy) - The Italian Basketball Federation have confirmed the appointment of Gianmarco Pozzecco as its new head coach of the men's national team.

Pozzecco takes over the role from Meo Sacchetti, who's departure was confirmed earlier this week having held the head coach position since the conclusion of FIBA EuroBasket 2017.

The upcoming task for Pozzecco will be the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers as Italy conclude their First Round campaign with a trip to face the Netherlands with a win securing top spot in the group.

Pozzecco won a silver medal with Italy at the 2004 Olympics in Athens during his playing career before the now 49-year-old made the transition into coaching a decade ago.

The former point guard has been an assistant coach with Olimpia Milano since 2021, whilst previously winning the FIBA Europe Cup title in 2019 as Dinamo Sassari's head coach.

Italy will also step up preparations for FIBA EuroBasket 2022 with Milan one of the four host cities for the group phase with Greece, Croatia, Great Britain, Ukraine and Estonia forming the opposition.
