EUROBASKET 2009, WOMEN
TEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Experienced, confident team with many offensive weapons. Skilled perimeter players and active posts give opponents the difficult task of scoring. Much of the success of this team comes from the strength of their post play. Add to that the skilled offensive players on the perimeter and you have a great package. Their defense relies on quickness and shot blocking to limit scoring opportunities by the opponent. This team has all the tools and intangibles to win often.
TRANSITION

Transition game is divided into two phases. One is the quick outlet or steal and fast break to score easy baskets. The second phase is a secondary break that incorporates penetration, skip passes, and on ball screens. The secondary break is just as effective as the quick break. Prefer to get to the rim on penetration but teammates are prepared to catch and finish or shoot open shots.
OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES

All five players have the ball skills to get the ball to the rim on the dribble. This puts great pressure on the defense and makes closeouts and defending screens difficult. The post feed is the focal point of their half court spread motion offense. Once the ball is in the post, each post player can face up for shot or shot fake and exhibit a variety of excellent scoring post moves.
SET PLAYS
- Ball
reversed from wing to point, post exchange with high/low, low post
steps in to score.
- Wing
entry, on ball screen by post, back screen for post to basket, drive
for basket.
- Point
to wing entry, point down screens for post and clears out for post
one on one play.
ZONE OFFENSE

Basic 3 out/2 in high low set that is executed well. High post is important for on ball screening, diving to the basket to catch and score, and stepping to the perimeter to draw defenders to spread the zone. Strong low post presence shrinks the zone on any post touch. Good shooting and inside/outside balance makes this a difficult team to zone.
OB PLAYS

Ball side stack features several different actions. Guard sets back screen then receives screen to get free on ball side for jump shot. Player can deviate from set if they see an opening or back cut.
DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS

Play both man to man and 2-3 zone with equal effectiveness. A strong inside presence give perimeter players freedom to pressure ball and deny passing lanes and disrupt offensive flow. When ball is penetrated to the lane, posts step up and challenge or block many shots. Force jump shots when in the zone to keep ball out of paint. Block out and rebound well in both man to man and zone.
