TEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Very talented, physical and skilled unit. Very quick in transition with the ball. Total sprint once they
gain possession. Posts run in the break and finish around the basket. Multiple players play multiple
positions on offense making for match-up problems for the opponent. Good shooting team. Score in
many ways. They don't have to rely on the three point shot because of scoring ability off the dribble
and in the post. Cohesive unit with style of play that matches their talent well. Force opponent to be
strong with the ball and create turnovers with their pressure on ball defense.
TRANSITION
The blocked shot and defensive rebound make the transition game possible. The unique quality of
this transition game is the emphasis on getting to the basket. Will pass to open wings only if path to
the basket is shut down. All perimeter players and one post can take the rebound and go full court
with it on the dribble. The speed they move down the court puts much pressure on the opponent's
defense.
OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES
Fluid, well orchestrated half court offense. Offense flows without any hesitation and all cuts and
penetration are done at a high speed. This team has perfected the on ball and roll concept. The roll
is closer to a sprint and big posts present a big target for the passer. Big guys can catch and finish
on the move. Lots of screen away action on ball reversal. On penetration, perimeter players find
open spots on the three point line and are prepared to shoot.
SET PLAYS
- 1-4
high set. Point hits a high post stepping out. Point cuts through
lane and sets cross screen for
post.
- High
post entry and flare screen for the point. Immediate on ball screen
and roll to the basket.
- Same
as #1, but now the post steps into paint to screen for the cutter
for open shot or drive.
Zone attack is a free lance offense that contains many man-to-man principles. Dribble penetration,
quick ball reversals, on ball screens in the high post and post feeds are the main areas of
concentration. Shooters spot up after cutting through the zone. Find areas not occupied by
defenders and create a shifting zone because of it.
OB PLAYS
Basic OB play is 3 along the lane. Ball side perimeter player pops out the catch. Inside there is an
immediate cross screen for an open post feed in the lane.
DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
An aggressive, attacking defensive mentality. Give great help on the post from behind. If opponent
gets it inside, this defense delivers physical defense with one, two or three defenders helping out.
Defense creates offense consistently because of their ability to score in transition. Play a 2-3 match-
p zone by applying pressure on the ball, signaling cutters through the zone, communicating
andbumping all cutters through the lane. Will pick up full court and pressure the ball handler the
length of the floor.
