SALAMANCA (2010 FIBA World Championship for Women) - Alba Torrens has been one of Spanish basketball’s brightest stars the past couple of summers at the Olympics and the EuroBasket Women.
The 20-year-old’s quality was confirmed on Monday when she was named FIBA Europe Young Women’s Player of the Year.
Torrens averaged 8.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game to help the Spanish capture a bronze medal at the EuroBasket in Latvia.
She thrilled the crowds with her end-to-end play just as she did as an 18-year-old at the Beijing Olympics the year before.
Torrens, a shooting guard/small forward at Halcon Avenida, will play for Spain at the FIBA World Championship for Women later this year in the Czech Republic.
She edged out Louice Halvarrson of Sweden and Jelena Milovanovic of Serbia for the Young Women’s Player of the Year honor.
The 2008 winner, Gintare Petronyte of Lithuania, finished fourth.
