MADRID (2010 FIBA World Championship for Women) - Amaya Valdemoro didn’t knock down a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer against Fenerbahce on Wednesday but the Spain star didn’t go empty-handed this week.
Glamour Magazine has presented their Sports Award for 2010 to the Spanish women’s national team which, led by the 34-year-old Valdemoro, captured the bronze medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in the Czech Republic.
"This is an acknowledgement for the great work done in the World Championship but above all, for the work done in previous years,” said Valdemoro, the MVP of the EuroBasket Women 2007 in Italy and one of the leading players in the EuroLeague Women for more than a decade.
She was speaking at the Ritz Hotel in Madrid where she, Elisa Aguilar, Laura Nicholls and Anna Cruz accepted the award on behalf of Spain.
"This national team has a long future and at the very least, we will try to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.”
Aguilar, who has played for Spain for several years, added: "It's the first time that our national team has received an award but this is just recognition for the successful work done by the women's team for many years that culminated with the bronze medal at the World Championship.
