    LAS PALMAS (2014 FIBA World Championship) - Spain are planning to have a new arena built in Las Palmas with construction to get underway this year if the country is selected as hosts of the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

    The venue will have more than 10,000 seats and according to a press release issued by the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), a budget of 90million euros for the proposed arena has already been approved by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.

    The FEB said the Cabildo (the most important public institution on the island) “guarantees 75% of the institutional contribution needed for the construction of the Pabellón Siete Palmas (Seven Palms Arena).”

    Spain, China and Italy are hoping to win the right to stage the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

    A decision on the host nation is to be made the weekend of May 23-24 in Geneva.
