CADIZ (Olympics) - Spain have been one of the darlings of international basketball for several years with success in EuroBaskets and a gold medal triumph at the 2006 FIBA World Championship proof that they are one of the top sides in the sport.

The Olympics haven’t been as kind to the Spanish, though, especially four years ago in Athens when the team went undefeated in the preliminary round only to lose 102-94 to Team USA in the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, national team veteran Jorge Garbajosa still has fond memories of the Summer Games.

"I remember Sydney and Athens because the Olympics are special,” Garbajosa said.

“We didn´t get good results in either but Sydney was traumatic while in Athens one game sent us home, but I still have good memories of those times."

Garbajosa has been dogged by injuries the past two years, but he is training normally with the national team after missing almost the entire NBA season with the Toronto Raptors following an operation on his ankle and leg.

He agreed to a buyout with the Raptors earlier this summer, which is likely to pave the way for his return to Europe.

"I feel very good,” Garbajosa said.

“I still have a lot of work to do, but I feel I am on the right path.

“The most important thing is a good preparation and we have to register all the concepts now and if we do that well, the results will come.”
