MADRID (Copa del Rey) - Real Madrid survived a tense final two minutes to beat Gran Canaria and reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals in Malaga.
Winners of 18 of their 20 ACB games to date and in first place in the ACB, the Madrid giants prevailed 85-82 with Louis Bullock tearing apart the Canary Islanders with 33 points on eight of 12 (66.7%) shooting, including four of seven (57%) from three-point range.
Salva Maldonado's Gran Canaria, behind the excellent Hungarian international Kornel David's 25 points, made the ACB leaders sweat until the end.
Leading 80-74 after Kerem Tunceri's three-ball with just under two minutes remaining, a basket from Jimmie Hunter and then two free throws by David with 51 seconds to play trimmed Madrid's advantage to 80-78.
Jim Moran of Gran Canaria fouled Bullock, who split two from the line and then Senegalese international Sitapha Savane, after being fouled by Felipe Reyes, missed two shots from the stripe and Madrid's Charles Smith rebounded.
Bullocked turned the ball over, however, and shortly after David was scoring to close the gap to 81-80 with only nine seconds left.
Madrid would end up holding on.
Reyes and Bullock each made two free throws, sandwiching a pair scored by David, to close out the scoring.
Reyes also had a good game for Madrid, scoring 20 points and hauling in nine rebounds.
Madrid will face Tau Ceramica in the last four after the Vitoria side's 82-73 win over Caja San Fernando.
In Saturday's other semi-final, DKV Joventut will face Winterthur Barcelona in a Catalan derby.
