MADRID (ACB) - The hugely popular Spanish coach Moncho Monsalve plans to return to training with Murcia's junior team as quickly as possible after being hospitalized with ventricular arrhythmia.

Monsalve, who was born in 1945 and represented Spain at the European Championships in 1963, '65 and '67, required emergency medical attention on 21 September and is thankfully on his way back to good health.

A longtime coach in Spain, Monsalve is best known in recent times for leading Brazil at the 2008 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens, and the FIBA Americas Championship in Puerto Rico the following year.

Monsalve guided the Brazilians to the gold medal three years ago and a place in the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

He then parted with Brazil, with Ruben Magnano taking the reins.

This summer, Monsalve travelled at his own expense to Caracas, Venezuela, to watch the OQT.

Despite his health scare, the veteran coach says he has no intention of leaving the game that he loves.

"Basketball for me is a form of life since I was 17 and I will not quit," he said.

Meanwhile, Monsalve has spoken out on the importance of having proper medical equipment at all arenas and gyms in case of emergencies.

"Regardless of the economic crisis, I believe it's necessary that you have defibrillators in all arenas and sporting centers of the country," he said.

"And of course, to have capable people with knowledge of how it works.

"Specifically, the person that was in the school Aristos of Madrid saved my life.

"I was reborn on the 21 of September 2012.

"Now, more than ever, I will try to be with my wife and family."
