SAN SALVADOR (IWBF) - Mexico thrashed Jamaica 93-41 to capture the gold medal at the Central America Qualification Tournament for Wheelchair Basketball.
The Mexicans trailed by eight early on but stormed back and led 44-27 at half-time with Carlos Diaz and Jose Ortega each pouring in 12 first-half points for Mexico.
They lowered the boom after the restart to take a commanding 67-27 lead into the final quarter and there was no way back for the Caribbean country.
Alfredo Lopez had 21 points, included a trio of three-balls, to lead Mexico while Ortega contributed 20.
Jamaica’s Tanto Campbell scored 12 and Brian Ingram nine.
Mexico won the gold, Jamaica silver and Puerto Rico bronze.
They will join Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia and the USA at the Americas Cup in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada to battle for one of three invitations to the 2010 World Championship in Birmingham, Great Britain.
Puerto Rico beat El Salvador 54-43 in that crucial bronze-medal game that sealed the Puerto Ricans’ place in the Americas Cup.
Hector Maldonado had 17 points and Carlos Ocasio 14 for Puerto Rico.
El Salvador’s Rafeal Melgar scored 15 and Raul Alvarega 14.
In the fight for seventh place, Honduras went down 67-39 to Guatemala.
The winners’ Juan Cuxun had a game-high 31 points and Fredy Acajabon and David Lara contributed eight apiece.
James Andreafis finished with 19 in a losing cause for Honduras with team mate Danilo Portales adding in 16.
The game between Costa Rica and Nicaragua was awarded to Costa Rica as Nicaragua had to return home early.
