LONDON (EBL) - We are pleased to announce the 2005-06 EBL Players and Coaches of the Year!
Leading the way is Worcester Wolves’ 6’8” centre Ty Shaw who has been selected as the EBL Division I Men’s Player of the Year. Shaw helped lead the Wolves to a National Trophy victory this season as well as a 5th- placed finish in the men’s first division. He also maintained a ‘double-double’ scoring 17.2 points per game complementing his 11.8 rebound average.
On the women’s side, American Stephanie Gandy earns Player of the Year honours for 2005-06 after an outstanding season with the City of Sheffield Hatters. Apart from her MVP performance in the Hatters’ playoff final win against Rhondda Rebels, Gandy was among the top five in several EBL Division One statistical categories including points, rebounds, steals, and blocked shots per game.
Dave Titmuss of the Reading Rockets and Rhondda Rebels’ leader Steve Williams are the EBL Coaches of the Year for Division One Men and Women, respectively.
Titmuss joined the Rockets midway through the 2004-05 season and has helped them earn the reputation as being one of the EBL’s finest teams. This season saw the Rockets finish as runners up in both the league and National Cup and in May, they defeated their rivals Worthing Thunder to become Division One Men playoff champions.
Unfortunately for Steve Williams a perfect season was spoiled in the playoff final against Sheffield, however, it is undeniable that the Rhondda Rebels have been the superior women’s team in the EBL for the past two years. Rhondda was rarely in a position where a loss was even in the cards during the 2005-06 season, having won all of their league games by an average of 41 points. With the help of England players Rosie Mason, Andrea Congreaves, Sally Kaznica, Gillian d’Hondt and WNBA sharpshooter Laurie Koehn, the Rebels proved to be an unstoppable force this past season.
