MANCHESTER (2006 Paralympic World Cup) - The 2006 Visa Paralympic World Cup is underway in Manchester, United Kingdom. Over 350 competitors from 41 countries will compete in four sports this week.
Wheelchair basketball took to the court this morning (Monday) to herald the start of the world-class event as Mexico overcame Spain by 42 points to 32 in the opening match of the tournament.
Athletics, swimming, cycling (track) will commence later this week.

The Visa Paralympic World Cup is the annual global showpiece for elite disability sport and is being staged for the second year in Manchester.
Many of the world’s biggest stars including Tanni Grey-Thompson, Oscar Pistorius, Natalie Du Toit, David Weir, and Darren Kenny will compete during the seven-day competition.
Maureen Orchard, President of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation said:
“It is wonderful to see so many top nations in Manchester for the Visa Paralympic World Cup. The event has started extremely well today and will only get stronger as the tournament progresses”
Mike Brace, Chair of the British Paralympic Association said: “We are delighted to be hosting the second Visa Paralympic World Cup. I’m sure this week we will see tremendous performances from all the competitors, world-records broken and superb performances from some of the strongest nations in the world.”
The Visa Paralympic World Cup runs from 1-7th May in Manchester. It is supported by the IPC, Visa, BBC, UK Sport, Manchester City Council and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
