HAMBURG (Germany) - Spain brought the intensity to take down co-hosts Germany and Sweden benefited from a quality display from Klara Lundquist as Group D caught fire. Spain are a perfect 2-0 after having too much in the tank at both ends of the floor for the co-hosts, while Sweden put their foot on the gas after half-time to break down Great Britain.
Intensity and class of Carrera fuels success for Spain
The still undefeated Spain showed their depth, class and laser-focus on the ultimate prize as they claimed a 79-60 triumph against Germany. Having shown their podium potential against Great Britain, this was another strong showing as they inflicted disappointment on a noisy home crowd who gave great backing to Germany.
Dominant on the glass and with 38 bench points, more than half of those came from the superb Raquel Carrera who dropped a 20-piece. Meanwhile, Germany will still take some positives and they can still progress. Luisa Geiselsoder impressed with 16 points and 8 rebounds.
Lundquist lights it up as Sweden soar
Sweden showed strength of character to recover from an opening day loss to Germany and record a first win by beating Great Britain 75-66. Kevin Taylor Lundgren and his players really have the Brits' number since they also did the double over them in the Qualifiers - although those matchups were much tighter affairs.
Sweden made their game-breaking run midway through the penultimate period and it was enough to get over the line, with their opponents briefly threatening to rally in the last minutes. Klara Lundquist was superb and racked up a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Holly Winterburn top-scored for Great Britain with 19 points.
It was also the second game for Lundquist with more than 15 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in the competition - something only three other players have ever managed in the last 30 years.
