LIMA (Peru) - The Dominican Republic earned the last Semifinal spot in the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, beating Uruguay on the last day of the Group Phase that was played this Friday, while Puerto Rico remained remained undefeated by beating the United States.
The Dominicans, with their triumph, joined Argentina, Puerto Rico and the United States, which had already reached their ticket to Semifinals, on the previous date.
The Dominican squad (2-1) won it with their defensive intensity and their offensive discipline to beat Uruguay (1-2) by 83-57 and take second place in Group B.
Lionel Figueroa led the team with 16 points, along with Juan Suero with 13, by the hand of point guard Gelvis Solano, who distributed nine assists.
In the duel for the top of Group A, Puerto Rico (3-0) defeated the United States (2-1) with a score of 87-84, to finish unbeaten.
The Puerto Ricans came from behind and after falling in the first half by 57-46, they imposed their defensive physicality and mounted a 23-12 comeback to win it.
A Derek Reese three-pointer with 23 seconds to go in the game put Puerto Rico up 86-84 and sealed the deal in the thriller.
Devon Collier with 23 points and 10 rebounds, led the scoreboard for the Puerto Ricans. For USA, Jermaine Samuels Jr. contributed 17 points and Alpha Diallo 16.
Mexico (1-2) surprised Argentina (2-1) in Group B, by winning 72-64. However, the result did not influence the match-up of the next round. In fact, the technical staff of Argentina, headed by Sergio Hernández, decided to give a rest day to two of his referents: Luis Scola and Facundo Campazzo.
For the Mexicans, José Estrada led the scorers with 18 points. Gabriel Deck left 13 accountants and Luca Vildoza 12, for the albicelestes.
For its part, Venezuela (1-2) took third place in Group A by defeating Virgin Islands (0-3) by 87-84. Nestor Colmenares dressed as a hero by scoring a double under the basket with 16 seconds left, to put Venezuelans in front 85-84 and then tipped a stopper to Laron Smith with five seconds left, which was crucial to direct the first conquest of the vinotinto in the tournament.
Jhornan Zamora was the top scorer of Venezuela with 19 points and five triples, while Gregory Vargas added 14. Michael Carrera contributed a double-double of 12 units and 11 rebounds and Colmenares scored 10. For the Caribbean, Georgio Milligan and Walter Hodge accounted for 22 and 18 points, respectively.
This Saturday, in the Semifinals, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and Argentina will be measured against the United States. The winners will play for the gold medal, on Sunday, while the defeated will fight for the bronze.
In reclassification, Venezuela and Uruguay will clash for fifth place and Mexico and the Virgin Islands will do the same for seventh place.
