SAN JUAN (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) - The Dominican Republic defeated Mexico by the score of 86-73 to stay on track for a 2010 FIBA World Championship berth.
Luis Flores had 18 points, Charlie Villanueva 14, Carlos Morban 13, Jack Michael Martinez 11 and Al Horford 10 for the Dominican Republic who are 3-3. Francisco Garcia missed the game due to an injury on his finger. The Caribbean country will play Canada tomorrow.
In the first quarter Charlie Villanueva had 8 points and Luis Flores 5 for the Dominicans who won the first ten minutes 22-15. Anthony Pedroza had 8 for Mexico.
The Dominican Republic was more efficient from long distance and all the players that entered the game in the second quarter contributed to keep a 44-33 halftime lead. Flores and Martinez had 7 each for the Dominicans. Anthony Pedroza had 11 for Mexico who shot 12-31 from the field (39%).
Noe Alonzo made 13 points in the third quarter, including three baskets from three point range to keep Mexico in range, but the Dominicans stayed on top taking advantage of the turnovers. At the end of the third quarter the score was 68-58.
In the final quarter the Dominicans started with an 8-0 run to be up 76-58 and after another comeback try, Carlos Morban sealed the game with a three pointer with 1:06 left.
Horacio Llamas had 16 points, Noe Alonzo 15 and Anthony Pedroza 13 for Mexico who are 0-6 in the Quarterfinals. They will finish this round against Panama who is also eliminated.
