    SAN JUAN (Americas) - The Development Committee held its first meeting on Thursday, March 17 at the regional office of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in the Americas in which several relevant issues were addressed relevant to the national federations in the continent, including their needs and the assistance required looking forward to the new competition system set to begin in 2017.

    The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Development Committee Enrique Tolcachier (Argentina), Vice President Glyne Clark (Barbados), members Fernando Pereza (Mexico) and Chris Clunie (USA) who was present on behalf of Kim Bohuny (USA) and invited observers Frederick Brown (Bahamas) and Carmelo Cortez (Venezuela), along with the Chairman of the FIBA Competitions Commission Eduardo Bazzi (Argentina), President of FIBA in the Americas Usie Richards and its Executive Director Alberto Garcia.

    The Committee outlined in its objective the preparation of a plan of implementation of the program of support to national federations through the Manual of National Federations and Olympic Solidarity Program; the preparation of an implementation plan for the Development Program of national federations through the Basketball Academy of the Americas, Coaches and Referees Association and Basketball Without Borders.

    Similarly, the committee exchanged ideas concerning the improvement of management and sports governance of national federations members ensuring they are in line with the statutes and regulations proposed by FIBA; while assuring their support of implementing a long-term technical support program carried out by experts appointed by the International Basketball Federation.     "This committee's main task carries a great responsibility to support each of the national federations of the American continent in their growth. The members of this committee are experienced individuals full of knowledge that can be of service to their development and that are willing to have an active participation in every step of the way.", said Tolcachier.

    "Americas is a continent of a great basketball tradition. Each national federation has its particularity and it is essential to have unity, of every member in this Committee, for the benefit of our basketball community and our national federations under the guidelines and overall mission of FIBA.", added the Development Committee Chairman.

    The Committee underlined the importance of setting clear and achievable goals for each federation through the assessments that have been made by the Sport Development and National Federations department in the Americas regional office, and create goals with a list of priorities and results that can be measured consistently.

    "The Development Committee is essential to FIBA’s global objective that has as its main goal the strengthening of our national federations. This first meeting was very satisfactory in the fact that it was an open exchange of ideas with knowledgeable and experienced professionals within the basketball community of our region. We have established clear objectives and prepared a work plan that has the support of our national federations as a priority. It marks a big first step towards the betterment and growth of our sport throughout the continent.", concluded the President of FIBA Americas in Usie Richards.
