BRNO (EuroLeague Women) - Gambrinus Sika Brno have been here before.
One year ago, in fact, they played at BC Volgaburmash for the EuroLeague Women title and lost in a very close game.
The same two teams will do battle again for the same European crown on Sunday but this time, Gambrinus are the home side and make no mistake, they will pull out all stops to guarantee their first EuroLeague Women crown.
Gambrinus reached the title showdown with a 61-54 win over French side US Valenciennes on Friday.
Brno’s Slovakian sharpshooter Zuzana Zirkova said: “Nothing is done right now.
“We escaped the first trap only. We prepared very well for the game and Valenciennes did not surprise us.
“The beginning of the game was very good for us and that was important.
“The second half was not as good as the first one, but we fought and showed our heart despite bad shooting and bad play on offense.
“I am happy that our fans helped us and I believe they will on Sunday again. We have to concentrate for the final now.”
Gambrinus only had a 49-45 lead after the third quarter, before an impressive final stage sealed the win for the home side.
“We were concentrated and we took a big advantage quickly,” said Gambrinus guard Hana Machova.
“On the other hand, the players of Valenciennes were nervous and made many mistakes. We were then in trouble after the break, but we started to play better again in last quarter and the game was not dramatic in the last few minutes because of that.”
DeLisha Milton top scored for Gambrinus with 20 points and she also admitted that netting an early three-pointer helped settle her nerves.
She said: “I always play a good game when I have made a basket like that. I am very happy we made the first step.”
