ATHENS (FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament) - The FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament brought the Croatian Zelico Pavlicevic, who use to be Panathinaikos' coach from 1991 until 1993, back to Athens.
The two-times European Champion (Cibona Zagreb/1986, Pop 84 Split/1991), had been the coach for the Japanese Men's National team in the 2006 World Championship, whilst currently he is on KK Zagreb's coaching position, which he, this year, led to winning Croatia's National Cup.

What is your opinion of Croatia's National Team?

"I believe that we can play even better. Especially at tomorrow's semifinal, that will judge qualification or not to the Olympic Games it is crucial that we improve. I did not enjoy the instability we presented in the game with Puerto Rico".

Who do you prefer as an opponent, Germany or Brazil?

"Certainly, Brazil. Germany is a great team and the coincidental presence of Nowitzski and Kaman has made them even more powerful. The two NBA players have offered a winner's air to the rest of their teammates".

Who to you grade the Greek team?

"It's a fantastic team with a great coach. Yannakis was a smashing player and is now a very good coach. The Greek team is one of the best in Europe and it is only fair that it has gained the whole planet's respect".

This year you won the National Croatian Cup with Zagreb KK.

"Yes. It was a great success. We won the team's first title, in 40 year, consisting solely of Croatian players. No foreigners whatsoever"!

What did you gain from your coaching days with Japan's National team?

"Many differences but the greatest was the players' height. Short players but with great will for tough training. Above all, this job was a personal motive and I think I came through with flying colors. Although we played well in the Mundobasket, we lost from New Zealand, with a shot in the clutch.Japan is a beautiful country, with a unique mentality and it was the experience of a lifetime".

After a long time you return to Athens.

"Actually it has become much more beautiful. It has changed totally, thanks to the Olympic Games. New and wider roads, huge buildings. I feel nice, I have many friends in Athens and I am enjoying every minute of it".

You experienced the competitiveness between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos. Would you like to comment on it?

"This is a fact that will never change. It's like a small scale war between them. If they continue to monopolize interest then a problem will arise. PAOK and ARIS must pick up pace and become worthy opponents for the two "all-time rivals". The whole matter, of only two "big" teams existing, is harmful for Greek basketball image.
