Competitions Commission holds two-day meeting at FIBA headquarters

MIES - FIBA's Competitions Commission is holding a two-day meeting on Friday-Saturday 8-9 May at the House of Basketball.

The main role of the 22-person body is to review all official competitions of FIBA.

During the 2014-2019 term of office, particular attention will be paid to FIBA's new competition system which comes into effect in 2017.

Mr Eduardo Bazzi, the Chairman of the Competitions Commission, said: "This commission has a very clear objective, which is to implement the new competition system. It is about implementing something that had already been decided during the previous term. We will need to work hard to be able to coordinate windows worldwide for us to have 70 games with 140 countries participating.

"Clearly there will be significant work from the technical aspects; they will need qualified referees, adequate infrastructures in each of the regions. We will need adequate infrastructure in each of the hosting cities, which will also need to decide which of the airports and hotels can receive guests comfortably in the windows established.

"[Each window] is going to be nine days where there will be an intense transit of players coming and going, and therefore 'conditions' need to be foreseen as this will be the first time that basketball will be engaged in such an intense activity. Other sports, such as football, handball, volleyball, rugby have already done this.

"This Commission will be paying attention to all international competitions, but this new competition system with windows throughout the year as of November 2017 will be its main focus."

The duties of FIBA's Competitions Commission are:
- To review and recommend the FIBA Calendar for approval by the Central Board
- To review all official competitions of FIBA
- To develop recommendations for change(s) to the manner and method of conduct of the official competitions
- To develop for the introduction of new official competitions
- To give advice on the allocation of official competitions
- To study the regulations governing all international competitions, as well as the regulations established by other divisions of FIBA for international competitions and to recommend changes to such regulations
- to ensure that the specific interests and development of women's and youth basketball are taken into account when making recommendations
- to make recommendations relating to the transition of players from youth to senior competitions
