Colangelo completes time as USA Basketball chairman

COLORADO SPRINGS (FIBA AmeriCup 2017/FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019) - Jerry Colangelo has decided not to seek another term as chairman of USA Basketball but will continue in his role as managing director

COLORADO SPRINGS (FIBA AmeriCup 2017/FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019) - Jerry Colangelo has decided not to seek another term as chairman of USA Basketball but will continue in his role as managing director of the men's national team as it enters a new era of the international game.

The USA Basketball board of directors will elect a new chairman at their annual meeting on 14 November.

As Colangelo steps down after eight years in the position, he leaves the role with the United States at the top in all five of FIBA's world-ranking categories: men's, women's, boys, girls and combined.

Most recently, the USA captured gold medals in the men's and women's tournaments at the Olympics in Brazil. Colangelo will concentrate on the men's side as it transitions from having Mike Krzyzewski as coach to Gregg Popovich. The long-time boss of the San Antonio Spurs was named as Krzyzewski's successor in October of 2015.

"Given the coaching change and the challenge of assembling a group of players for FIBA's new competition schedule, this is a good time to devote my full attention to the men's national team," Colangelo said.

Over a four-year cycle from 2017 through 2021, national teams - including the USA - will play regular home and away games during six windows to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and the 2021 FIBA Continental Cups.

Since Colangelo joined USA Basketball in 2005 as managing director of the men's national team, the program has finished third at the 2006 FIBA Basketball World Cup and first at the same tournament when it was held in 2010 and 2014. The USA won a FIBA Americas Championship in 2007 and claimed Olympic gold medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Colangelo created a program that has given the USA a vast pool of players and one that has ensured continuity. He also put it on sound financial footing and established Las Vegas as a training camp base and a city to have warm-up games.

Since Colangelo has served as chairman from 2009, the USA women have won world titles in 2010 and 2014 and Olympic titles in 2012 and 2016 while in most youth events, the Americans finished at the top or on the podium.

In official FIBA and FIBA Americas five-on-five competitions during his chairmanship, USA Basketball men's and women's teams (including youth) had an eight-year win-loss record of 267-6. USA teams also posted a 133-30 win-loss record in official FIBA and FIBA Americas 3x3 competitions.

USA women continued Olympic dominance with Colangelo as chairman

"As chairman of USA Basketball, I'm proud of what our teams at all levels have accomplished and how our players have embraced the responsibility of representing their country," said Colangelo, who is 76. "I look forward to working with the next chairman to ensure that we continue to honor and build on USA Basketball's rich tradition."
