BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The FIBA Regional Office-Asia continued its mission to help hone mentors and aspirants after successfully organizing separate Level 1 coaching courses in Turkmenistan and Iraq.

The Turkmenistan clinic took place in Ashgabat last 22-27 April, with decorated coach Torsten Loibl leading the program that began with classroom sessions and was followed by on-court work to help the participants apply the lessons.

"I’d like to thank our federation for providing an opportunity to develop and give us confidence in coaching," said player Nury Agajanov, who attended the course made possible by the FIBA Regional Office-Asia and the Basketball Federation of Turkmenistan.

Another cager in Pavel Averyanov took part in the six-day clinic and was thankful to have acquired newer lessons in coaching, particularly in developing IQ and communicating with his players

"It gave me the opportunity to get acquainted with new and up-to-date tendencies of coaching. I realized that basketball has become fast and dynamic, and how it is important to develop a player's IQ along with his physical conditioning," he said.

"I also got a lot from the lectures regarding planning and structuring of the practices, having an ability to deliver teaching points. It was very important to me to understand the significance of communication skills and how these skills have their influence on the quality of education of young players.”

After Turkmenistan, the level 1 courses then went to Baghdad from 2-7 May, with Mounir Ben Slimane presiding over the seminar conducted alongside the Iraqi Basketball Federation.

These coaching courses are part of the Regional Office’s continuous efforts to improve the National Federations, including, of course, the bench tacticians, who are undeniably an integral part of basketball games.
