Clarkson relishes chance to inspire young Filipinos to reach for their dreams

JAKARTA (Asian Games 2018) - Jordan Clarkson had a memorable debut for the Philippines national team in the Asian Games 2018 and is savoring this opportunity to inspire an entire nation.

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard was the most high profile inclusion in the Gilas Pilipinas lineup to the quadrennial games, and his much awaited first game for the Filipinos indeed lived up to the hype. The 6ft 5in (1.96m) guard exploded for 28 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the Philippines, helping them in what was the most exciting game so far in the packed-to-the-rafters GBK Basket Hall.

His stellar production, however, was not enough to carry the Philippines to their second victory of the tournament. China leaned on their own NBA talent, Zhou Qi, to prevail, 82-80. The Houston Rocket big man spearheaded their charge, dropping 25 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks.

    ...

It was a painful loss for the Filipinos, especially for Clarkson, who had to endure a bevy of stops and starts before finally securing all the clearances needed to play for the Philippines.

The prolific wingman, though, vows to make an even bigger impact in the Philippines' next match, a likely Quarter-Finals affair against old nemesis Korea.

"I'll be ready and be better next game," said Clarkson.

The former Los Angeles Laker is truly relishing the entire Asian Games experience, and he sees it as a great opportunity that's been a long time coming.

"I have always dreamed about representing the Philippines," he said prior to joining the team earlier this week. "This could only have been made possible with the love and support of my family, and of all my kababayans. I will continue to do my best to make my country proud and I hope to inspire young Filipinos to always follow their dreams."

This positive outlook has not gone unnoticed, especially by head coach Yeng Guiao, who heaped praises on his prized wingman.

"Jordan Clarkson just showed what kind of player he is," said Guiao. "He is heads and shoulders above all the players here, and he showed that."

Clarkson's effect on the Philippines contingent has truly been palpable, and it has extended beyond the hardwood, with many Filipino athletes showing their appreciation for the Filipino-American by going up to him and having their photos taken.
