BEIJING (CBA) - Guangdong clinched their fourth crown in five years on Sunday by beating Liaoning 90-81 to seal a 4-1 victory in the CBA Finals.
Taken to a fifth game after falling at Liaoning earlier in the week, that Game Four defeat allowed Guangdong to return home and seal the title in front of their own fans.
This season's CBA MVP, Zhu Fangyu, had a game-high 31 points for Guangdong. The China international is likely to be voted MVP of the play-offs as well.
On Friday, he buried a trio of three-pointers and was 10 of 13 inside the arc while also sinking both of his free throws.
During the title celebrations on the court, the 2.0m Zhu revealed he will get married after the Beijing Olympics.
And he also spoke about his terrific season, especially on offense in which his three-point shot was a major weapon.
"It's nothing strange," he said. "While I was playing in the reserve team (of Guangdong), I played on the interior all the time. I was quite tall at that time, no need to shoot from a distance.
"The progress (I've made) is that when I'm attacking, I understand the game situation better, and I know when to shoot, when to attack.
"As soon as I touch the ball, I know what to do next."
Jason Dixon weighed in with 18 points and Liu Xiaoyu 10 for Guangdong, while Liaoning got 21 from Yang Ming, and 15 apiece from Olumide Oyedeji and Li Xiaoxu.
Zhu, who averaged 28 points in the five games, is almost certain to win the MVP honor for the finals.
"I might (win the play-off MVP), probably be even better," he said in remarks to Basketball Pioneer.
"To be honest, I didn't expect to win that (league) MVP, it should have belonged to Mengke Bateer.
"But, I am good in the play-offs, anyway."
