HOUSTON (FIBA World Championship) - Yao Ming believes he will know within the next fortnight if he will be fit enough to represent China at this year's FIBA World Championship.

However, the 7ft 5in Houston Rockets center admits that his chances of playing in the tournament are currently only "50-50" as he battles his way back from foot surgery.

The 25-year-old has been able to step up his recovery after being told the broken bone in his foot is healing ahead of schedule but the Rockets ace is still facing a race against time to be fit for the FIBA World Championship, which begin on August 19.

"I cannot play basketball until August 1," said Yao in the Houston Chronicle.

"I still don't know (about playing in the World Championship). It's still 50-50, so two weeks from now I'll know if I can (play) or not, but I'm trying to get in the best shape that I can.

"I probably need to be at 80 or 90%," he added.

"But if I really cannot get in the best shape then I better not go because the World Championship is also a big (deal) for most of the players, and I don't want to go over there and (be) just a waste."
