    CHN - Yao claims weekly award

    NEW YORK (NBA) -- Chinese star Yao Ming has been named as the NBA's Western Conference Player of the Week. The imposing center averaged 27.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks as the Rockets finished the week 3-1 with wins over San Antonio, Milwaukee and Charlotte, and a loss to Dallas.

    NEW YORK (NBA) -- Chinese star Yao Ming has been named as the NBA's Western Conference Player of the Week.

    The imposing center averaged 27.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks as the Rockets finished the week 3-1 with wins over San Antonio, Milwaukee and Charlotte, and a loss to Dallas.

    Yao scored 34 points against Charlotte, having tallied 28 against both Milwaukke and San Antonio and 21 against Dallas. Yao was 14 of 14 from the charity stripe against Milwaukee to tie a franchise record for free throws made without a miss.

    It is the sixth Player of the Week award of Yao's career, and he wins it one week after his teammate, Tracy McGrady.

    Among the players Yao beat to claim this award were Brazilian Leandro Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns, and Argentinian Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs.

    Boston star Kevin Garnett collected the Eastern Conference award after three straight double-doubles for the undefeated Celtics.
