SALT LAKE CITY (FIBA World Championship) - Chinese center Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets suffered a broken foot in Monday night's 85-83 defeat at the Utah Jazz.

Yao went down in the first quarter after playing just five minutes and now he will miss the remainder of the season.

It is unclear what the implications are regarding the 7ft 5in star's availability for the FIBA World Championship in Japan.

"I was just fighting for position," Yao said. "I think (Mehmet) Okur just kicked on my foot that happens on the court."

The giant remained on the floor for a few more plays, but after landing on his foot awkwardly on consecutive plays, he was helped off the court and taken to the locker room.

He has broken a bone near his toe.

"I hope I'm the last one," Yao said. "My last post-surgery comeback, I had 20 (points) and 10 (rebounds). Maybe it's the best thing for me, and when I come back I'll be stronger."

Yao missed 21 games earlier this season with a toe infection which ultimately required surgery.

The FIBA World Championship tips off  in August.
