HOUSTON (NBA) - China national team star Yao Ming has decided to retire, according to the American media.

The 30-year-old Houston Rockets center, the most famous player ever to come out of Asia, has had his last couple seasons ruined by an injury to his left foot.

The 2.29m pivot didn't play at all in the 2009-10 campaign while recovering from an operation to a broken bone in his foot.

Yao thought he was on his way back last season but five games into the campaign, he went down with a stress fracture in his ankle.

A perennial Western Conference All-Star selection, Yao has been one of international basketball's most cherished figures.

He fired China to three consecutive FIBA Asia Championship gold medals and also played at the 2002 and 2006 FIBA World Championships, and at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

Yahoo! Sports were first to report Yao's decision to retire.
