BEIJING (Olympics) - FIBA President Bob Elphinston and FIBA Secretary General and IOC Member Patrick Baumann met yesterday with Liu Qi, President of BOCOG (Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games).
During the meeting, the status of basketball in China, the preparation for the Olympic Games and future prospects for China in the international basketball family were discussed.
President Qi confirmed that basketball was by far the most popular team sport in China and that a large (re)construction program for basketball venues around the country was underway. He also expressed the wish of hosting more world basketball events after the Olympic Games.
The President and the Secretary General of FIBA expressed their satisfaction and gratitude at the construction of the magnificent Wukesong venue that will host the Olympic Basketball tournaments and was built according to the FIBA Study Centre guidelines.
