Emmett breaks CBA scoring record
SHANDONG (Chinese Basketball Association) - Andre Emmett, the 6ft 5in guard of Shandong scored 71 points on Sunday in a 129-113 win against Jiangsu to break the CBA single-game scoring record.
The previous mark of 70 points was held by Sunjun, former Chinese national team forward and the ruling Dongguan head coach.
Emmett's scoring performance might get an asterisk next to it though because fifth place Jiangsu seemed to be satisfied with their ranking and the future opponents in the elimination period and therefore did not engage fully in this game.
Meanwhile, last year's losing finalist Xinjiang had a turbulent week. On Friday, they beat defending champions Guangdong to end the table toppers' 15-game winning streak. But they followed that up with a 100-86 defeat at the hands of Guangsha on Sunday, to surrender their second place to their rivals.
This was their second meeting between the two teams. Xinjiang won by 10 in the first half of the season. According to CBA rules, the rankings of the two teams with the same Win-Loss ratings will be decided by the score differential in their two games.
So Sunday's result put Guangsha, guided by former Chinese national head coach Wangfei, ahead of Xinjiang, who are coached by Wangfei's national team predecessor Jiang Xingquan.
Meanwhile, Guangdong recoverred from their defeat against Xinjiang by beating sixth-place Liaoning 106-87 on Sunday and have their top spot for the regulation season all but sealed. They need just one more win from the final three rounds to secure first place.
Elsewhere, Stephon Marbury missed two free-throws with six seconds remaining as Shanxi lost to visiting Army 89-88.
