BEIJING (CBA) - Xinjiang may be flying high in China's CBA with 19 wins and just three defeats, but their star player Mengke Bateer doesn't consider his team to be among the favourites to capture the title.

"We haven't even thought about the championship so far," he said. "We want to win, but it's difficult, let's see what happens."

Bateer, whose nickname is Daba (it means Big Bateer) fears his team lacks the quality to win the championship.

And he also admits that he has to play better for them to have a chance.

"I think I am not in the right form," Bateer said.

"I only got involved in the team a month before the season started. That is a short period of time.

"We have many shooters, some very experienced coaches.

"However, we don't have the axle which links the defensive and offensive elements."

For now, Bateer wants his teammates to take it one game at a time.

"The regular season isn't done yet," he said. "There is no need to think about anything else other than focusing on the next game.

"I think, if we keep fighting like this, we should finish in the top four."

The 32-year-old Bateer says his priority is to play as well as possible in each game.

"Winning the championship is not a big deal to me," he said. "I prefer the game itself.

"I'm not saying if I can get 50 points that everything will be fine, but winning needs everyone's efforts."

Bateer has hinted that he may not play for many more years.

"Basketball has given me so much over the years, that's why I can't leave it," he said.

"My physical condition is okay. I should hold up for another couple of years, but I won't force myself. If I'm unable to do it, I'll retire."
