Wire-to-wire win powers East Asian team forward

ULAANBAATAR (Mongolia)- Chinese Taipei kept Lebanon under a tight leash through out and powered their way into the FIBA U16 Asia Cup 2025 Quarterfinals with a 97-70 result in the Qualifications to the Quarter-Finals game at the M Bank Arena on Thursday.

Chinese Taipei, playing in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup after eight years, thus earned a right to take on Japan in the Quarter-Finals slated for Friday, with the winners there earning a ticket to the FIBA U17 World Cup 2026 scheduled to take place in Turkey.

Chen Guan-jie collected a defensive rebound and capped an end-to-end fast break layup to open the scoring for the game and Chinese Taipei never even faced parity for the remainder of the game.

Wang I-Le accounted for seven of his team-high 19 points and Lu Shu-Wei had nine of his 17 for the game in the opening quarter helping the East Asian nation forge a healthy control of the scoreboard.

Chen Hung-Yu further led consolidated firing three out of four three-pointer attempts, scoring nine of his 17 points in the game in the third quarter to leave coach Wu Cheng-Chieh’s boys firmly perched before closing out the game without any damage.

Johnny Sawma and Mauricio Abboud fought gallantly for Lebanon – the former hitting a new tournament-high of 38 points in 15/25 field shooting – including reeling in five of his seven attempts from beyond the arc. Abboud returned his second double-double of the tournament with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
