China rely on Wang Siyu’s playmaking to defend Women’s Asia Cup crown

SHENZHEN (China) - In her fourth FIBA Women’s Asia Cup appearance, Wang Siyu commands respect as one of China’s most experienced and clutch performers. Having played in 2019, 2021 and 2023—where she helped China topple Japan in the Final—Wang plays in the 2025 tournament with a fierce determination to deliver back-to-back titles on home soil.

Currently averaging 7.0 points and an impressive 5.7 assists in under 12 minutes per game after the group stage, Wang orchestrates China’s offense with remarkable efficiency. She ranks third overall in assists, tallying 17 total while committing just a single turnover across three games. That's undoubteldy an indicator of her poise and precision under pressure. Her leadership has been integral to China sweeping through their group and securing a direct berth into the Semi-Finals.

Head coach Gong Luming highlights her vital role: "We have a combination of veterans and young players, but only three true point guards, and Wang Siyu is one of them. All our point guards are key playmakers and role models on and off the court."

Known as the "clutch queen" for her heroic performance at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022—most notably against Australia—Wang brings a calm intensity that lifts her team in critical moments.

Reflecting on the added pressure and motivation of playing at home, she said, "I really want to thank all our fans who are watching and supporting us. Fighting for our country at home gives pressure, but it also gives motivation; therefore, we really want to fight and to win for the people."

Wang credits the team’s thorough preparation for their strong start.

"We have prepared a lot for this Women’s Asia Cup," she said. "As long as we execute what we planned and practiced, the result will take care of itself."

She also praises rising star Zhang Ziyu’s impact: "People have to watch our key young player, who is Zhang Ziyu. She is very famous already. She is very talented and has a big impact on the game. She has done a great job for us here."

As China carve a path toward extending their dominance, Wang Siyu’s blend of experience, clutch playmaking and steady leadership anchors the squad’s relentless pursuit of victory.

With a Semi-Finals slot all wrapped up, the home side is one step closer to achieving their mission. Along the way, Wang remains focused on one goal—making the people proud with another Women’s Asia Cup title.
