CHI - Chile to host FIBA Americas Championship for Women 2007

VALDIVIA (2007 FIBA Americas Championship for Women) - In his visit to Chile, The Secretary General of FIBA Americas, Mr. Alberto Garcia, signed the deal to give Valdivia, Chile the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship for Women. This tournament is a qualifier for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
 
The President of Chile Sports, Mrs. Catalina Depassier, the President of the Chilean Olympic Committee, Mr. Neven Illic and the President of the Chilean Basketball Federation, Mr. Miguel Herrera, signed the deal along with Garcia to organize the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship for Women.
 
The host city is Valdivia which is 840 km south of Santiago, capital of Chile. The participating teams are Canada and USA for North America,; Cuba, Jamaica and Mexico from the Central American and Caribbean Zone and for South America Chile (host), Argentina and Brazil. The tournament will be played from September 23-29, 2007.
 
Mr. Garcia visited the city and was welcomed by the Governor of the Province, Mr. Ricardo Yanez and the Mayor Bernando Berger. Both were accompanied by Mr. Miguel Flores, Director of Chile Sports in the tenth region.
 
Mr. Berger accompanied Garcia and gave him a tour into the Antonio Azurmendi Coliseum with capacity for 4,000 spectators and also thru the hotels that will server for accommodations for the teams, authorities, referees and the press.
 
In a news conference the local authorities were pleased with the deal and Mr. Garcia thanked Mrs. Depassier in name of FIBA Americas along with Mr. Illic, Mr. Herrera and the Mayor of Valdivia, Mr. Berger for the realization of this important event.
