[by Ryan MCNEILL] - The big buzz around Canada Hoops this weekend is about the Canadian Amateur Sports Network (CASN) and le Réseau du sport amateur Canadien (RSAC) and what they could mean in terms of funding and recognition for players.
Earlier this month the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) sent in an application to be start two new digital channels which would become Canadian Amateur Sports Network (CASN) and le Réseau du sport amateur Canadien (RSAC). These digital channels would help increase exposure while providing additional funding for both Olympic and non-Olympic sports.
Applications for the two new networks were formally submitted by the COC to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in early December. These stations would allow Canadians to watch amateur athletes compete in regional, national and international events in both Olympic and non-Olympic sports. There has been a huge push by Rogers and Express Vu to add digital content in recent years so the idea of two new digital television networks that focus solely on Canadian amateur sport seems like an idea that is likely to be approved.
A decision about the two networks could be made as early as this fall.
