Canada stays perfect in FIBA Women’s AmeriCup action with win over Argentina

    Game Report

Canada won its second-straight game of the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2025 with a win over Argentina on Sunday.

SANTIAGO (Chile) – Continuing on its quest for gold at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2025, Canada moved to 2-0 with a 71-48 win over Argentina at Centro de Deportes Colectivos on Sunday afternoon.

    Turning point

Canada led for all but 12 seconds of the game; however, the team solidified the point of no return in the third quarter as they led by as many as 28 points. The Canadians’ biggest scoring run was 13-0 against Argentina, and defensively Canada held its opponent to only a 6-0 run before getting a basket of their own.

    Player of the game

Shayeann Day-Wilson was the hero for Canada with 18 points on 50 percent shooting as well as 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Yvonne Ejim, Kayla Alexander, and Syla Swords all had strong showings for Canada, but Day-Wilson's efforts on both sides of the ball made the difference for Canada.

    Stats don’t lie

Canada's defense continued to smother opponents as it recorded 38 defensive rebounds in the win, but also tallied 7 blocks and forced Argentina to commit 23 fouls.

    Bottom line

Canada has continued to have tougher tests against each opponent, but the biggest accomplishment has been shooting 45 percent from the field. The ability to additionally hold its opponents to less than 30 percent shooting on top of that has made the difference in its wins.

    They said

"I thought one of the reasons we were able to play off the bounce today, one of the reasons we were able to get some good looks at the basket, was because of Shy," said Canada head coach Nell Fortner.
