SAN JUAN (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) - After a great start, leaving Mexico in a record 40 points, Canada dominated the US Virgin Islands by the score of 87-67 on day 3 of the FIBA Americas Championship.
The interior attack of Canada was not a match for the US Virgin Islands defense and also they took advantage of the Caribbean team mistakes making 20 points off turnovers.
Canada dominated the first quarter 24-14 with 7 points from Jesse Young and 5 from Olu Famutimi. The North American team kept a balanced attack to overwhelm USVI at the half 44-26 led by guard Jermaine
Anderson with 8.
USVI tried hard to return to the game but the Canadian defense was too tough, forcing them to shoot 35% from the field (20-57) but in the free throw line they made 75% of them (21-28).
Walter Hodge led USVI with 18 points and Kevin Sheppard followed with 10. The Virgin Islands have an 0-3 record and finish the preliminary round tomorrow against Mexico.
All eleven Canadian players on the court scored and their leader was Jesse Young with 14 while Olu Famutimi netted 12 and Andy Rautins 11.
