TORONTO (National Federation) - Canada Basketball and the Canadian School Sport Federation (CSSF) announced today the Canada Basketball/CSSF Scholarship Program.
The program will award a total of $60,000 to deserving high school basketball players from across the country who will be enrolled in a Canadian post secondary education institution the following year.
Every provincial and territorial High School Athletic Association is participating in the program which recognizes Canadian student-athletes and the option for athletes to continue their post secondary basketball career in Canada.
Applicants are evaluated based on academic and athletic achievement, as well as their leadership and volunteerism in athletics and in the community.
"This is a great way for Canada Basketball to show its support of young players who want to continue their career in Canada," stated Canada Basketball Executive Director and CEO Fred Nykamp.
"Canada Basketball is dedicated to growing the game at all levels of competition through the "Be One" national membership program, and this is small example of our commitment."
Applicants must be a Canadian citizen and are nominated through their zone high school athletic associations and passed on to their provincial/territorial high school athletic associations.
An equal number of female and male players from each province and territory will be awarded the Canada Basketball/CSSF Scholarship, with the exact number of recipients determined by each provincial or territorial high school athletic association.
"An excellent way to keep our athletes in Canada is to make it financially more viable for them to stay in here. Canada Basketball has shown leadership in this area by assisting with tuition costs through this new scholarship program," stated John Paton, CSSF President.
