RIGA (2011 FIBA U19 World Championship) - Canada has seen off a depleted Egyptian team to keep their hopes alive of advancing to the quarter final round.
In a clash of the two bottom teams in Group F, it was a Canadian side ably led by Kevin Pangos that was coming out on top as Egyptian Coach Zaher Abdelbasset could only watch as his already depleted lineup lost another player.
Following the departure of Hatem Hossam who flew back to home to Egypt yesterday to receive further treatment on a leg injury, Abdelbasset was about to suffer a further loss when Youssef Shousha sustained what appeared to be a major wrist injury midway through the second quarter, requiring the shooting guard to be taken to hospital.
At this stage of the tournament with fatigue kicking in, it was a major blow for Egyptian hopes as Canada took advantage of their already stretched opponents to push on for a simple 20 point win.
In Canada’s final Eighth-Quarter final match, the Canadians will come up against Serbia who currently sits a point ahead of them on eight following their win over Croatia. Should the Canadians win then both teams will be tied on nine points. If no other teams are left sitting on nine points then Canada will go through ahead of the Serbs on account of beating them. But if Croatia lose to USA and Lithuania fail to win either of their remaining games then the situation becomes a little more tricky with up to four teams then sitting on nine points. If this second scenario were to occur then points differential only including games involving the teams in question will come into use.
