SANTIAGO (Chile) – Derbies are usually played under a completely different context and the rivalry between Brazil and Argentina is one of the best examples of that. Despite not being necessarily close in the head-to-head record, Argentina has recently managed to give their opponent plenty of headaches. Not on Saturday though. Brazil uncorked a 23-7 run to close the game during its FIBA AmeriCup 2025 debut, putting the finishing touches on its 71-50 rout. This was Brazil’s 12th win in 15 games against Argentina since 2003 in AmeriCup tournaments, but things have been much more contentious between the two teams on recent occasions.
In Brazil’s undefeated run to win the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023, Argentina was the only team capable of making them sweat. That game, which Brazil won 56-55, was the only one where its margin of victory was single digits. Additionally, it featured 7 lead changes, and Argentina led by as many as 8 points in the second quarter. A year later, Argentina beat Brazil twice at the South American Women’s Championship (75-48 in the Group Stage and 84-76 in the Final) en route to the gold medal. Melisa Gretter, Amaiquen Siciliano, and Florencia Chagas shined against a solid Brazilian squad that was missing their WNBA stars. And that was the biggest difference on Saturday. Damiris Dantas went off for 24 points and 7 rebounds, while Kamila Cardoso had 8 points, 11 boards, 4 assists, and a pair of blocks. Their sheer size and strength on the inside were reflected in the 32-10 edge in the paint that nearly matched the difference in the final result.
Brazil extended its unbeaten AmeriCup run to 8 games and re-established its dominance in the South American derby. They couldn’t have asked for a better debut.
