RIO DE JANEIRO (FIBA Americas Championship) - Anderson Varejao has been a no-show for Brazil the past couple of summers but the frizzy-haired Cleveland Cavaliers big man will be in the trenches this summer when the South Americans attempt to clinch a spot in next year’s FIBA World Championship in Turkey.
Anderson will join the national team in Sao Paulo on July 26 ahead of the FIBA Americas Championship in San Juan, Puerto Rico – a qualification tournament for Turkey.
The veteran power forward/center, who last played for Brazil at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan, said: "I have always been ready to defend the Brazilian colors, since my first call-up in 2001.
“I wasn't able to take part in the last two years due to the contract (with Cleveland) and injuries. I have already spoken to coach Moncho Monsalve and I will be present on the date given for the training camp.
“We have a talented group and we have a team that can try to win the Americas title and qualify for the FIBA World Championship in Turkey."
CBB president Carlos Nunes could not hide his delight.
"It's a satisfaction to have the visit of Anderson to the CBB headquarters,” he said.
“He was out of the national team for the last two years for problems he couldn't control but he always showed a lot of interest and will to defend Brazil. We will have a competitive Brazil team to get the Copa America title and clinch a passport for the World Championship in Turkey."
