SAO PAULO (FIBA Americas) - Brazil great Oscar Schmidt is recovering after emergency surgery to remove a tumour from his brain.
The FIBA Hall of Famer, nicknamed the 'Holy Hand' for his prolific scoring record, has been released from the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo following the operation.
Schmidt, 53, complained of headaches during a trip to Florida with his wife to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, and was admitted to hospital after fainting upon their return to Brazil.
Schmidt (pictured with former FIBA President Bob Elphinston and current FIBA President Yvan Mainini), who holds the record for points scored in professional games with an amazing total of 49,737, was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame last year.
He made 326 appearances for his country, totalling 7,693 points which includes a record 1,093 in the Olympic Games.
He helped Brazil to gold at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis in 1987, scoring 46 points as Brazil beat the United States 120-115.
He also played in five different Olympic Games between 1980 and 1996, and was part of the Brazil squad that took bronze at the 1978 FIBA World Championship.
