PORTOVIEJO (U15 South American Championship for Women) – It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Janeth Arcain was catching passes at the top of the key and driving into the lane to score points for the Brazilian women’s national team.

Among the many achievements of Janeth was a gold-medal win at the 1994 FIBA World Championship for Women in Australia.

Janeth has retired from playing, but is still active as a coach.

She guided Brazil to the title of the U15 South American Championship for Women at the weekend with a victory over Argentina in a battle of unbeatens in the final.

Brazil trailed entering the fourth quarter but snatched the crown with a 56-54 win.

“The girls had a lot of courage in the end,” Janeth said.

“They did not give up and sought victory.

“The entire group, athletes and the coaching staff are to be congratulated for the work. As for everyone, that title also has a special significance for me because it's my first win as a coach of a Brazilian team.”

Gabriella de Oliveira led Brazil with 13 points while Thamara Davis finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

Izabella Sangalli poured in nine points, handed out five assists and claimed four rebounds while Ana Carolina Borges scored six points and had seven helpers.

The game’s leading scorer was Argentina’s outstanding Micaela Sancisi with 23 points.
